Discussing vaccines with your child's doctor

A parent’s guide for discussion and informed decision-making.

Every parent wants to protect their child. Vaccines (also called immunizations) are one of the most effective tools available to keep kids safe from serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases. If you have questions, you're not alone. Those questions deserve thoughtful answers. That's exactly what shared decision-making is about.

Making decisions together with your pediatrician

You and your child's doctor work together as a team, reviewing your child's unique health history, discussing any questions you have, exploring available options and finding the approach that's right for your family.

We’re here to help

Whether your child is an infant, toddler or school-age, Wolfson Children’s Hospital is here to help you and your family navigate these conversations with confidence.

Preparing for your conversation

A little preparation can make a big difference when talking with your pediatrician. Here are some simple steps to help you feel ready and confident.

  • Gather what you need

Start by pulling together your child's health information: any chronic conditions, allergies, recent illnesses, medications they're taking or past vaccine reactions. If you have your child's vaccine records, bring those along, too. (Don't worry if you can't find them. Your pediatrician can help figure out what's due.)

Also be sure to note any upcoming travel plans or school requirements that might affect immunization timing.

  • Bring your questions

Jot down whatever questions are on your mind, whether it's about something you saw online, heard from friends or family, or have simply been wondering about.

No question is too small. This is your time to get the answers you need. Your doctor is there to help sort through information and provide clear guidance specific to your child.

Questions to ask

Not sure what to ask? We’ve got you covered. Here are some conversation starters to help you get the information you need.

Understanding recommendations

  • Which vaccines are routinely recommended at this age?
  • What factors should I consider when deciding today?

Benefits & risks

  • What are the benefits of this vaccine for my child?
  • What risks or side effects should I know about?
  • How do the risks of the disease compare to the risks of the vaccine?

Timing & scheduling

  • Can we space vaccines out or combine any today?
  • Is there a preferred timing for certain vaccines?
  • What happens if my child is behind schedule? Where should we start?

Your child's medical history

  • How does my child's health history affect which vaccines they should get?
  • Is there anything that would make you recommend a different vaccine schedule for my child?

Preparing for after the shot

  • What should I expect after the vaccine?
  • When should I call the office if something doesn't seem right?
  • Is there anything I should or shouldn't give my child after the shot?

Clarifying advice from others

  • I read/heard something about this vaccine. Is it true? Can you help me understand whether it applies to my child?
  • Is this source reliable? Where do you get your vaccine information?

If you're unsure or need more time

  • Can you walk me through that again in simpler terms?
  • Can you explain what most parents in our situation choose?
  • What trustworthy resources do you recommend for learning more?

Remember, your pediatrician's job is to explain options and help you make an informed decision. Take the time you need to feel comfortable with your choices.

What to do after the appointment

Before leaving, make sure you:

  • Book your child’s next check-up or follow-up visit.
  • Get a copy of updated vaccine records for your files.
  • Know who to call if you have questions or concerns later.

Keep the conversation going! You don't have to figure everything out in one visit. Your pediatrician is there to answer new questions or talk things through again as your child grows and their needs change.
